About
Welcome to Bernstein's Bagels, a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Portland at 816 N Russell St. This bagel shop is a must-visit for anyone seeking to indulge in the rich and flavorful world of bagels, set against the backdrop of a buzzing culinary scene.
Bernstein's is renowned for its selection of delicious 'Sandos,' where each bagel is transformed into a culinary masterpiece. For instance, the Lox Cream Cheese sandwich features perfectly cured salmon, capers, and sweet onions, all for just $12. It’s a steal in comparison to other Portland establishments, where prices often soar above $20. Another standout is the Popper, filled with spicy Mama Lil’s schmear and avocado—perfect for those on the go at only $9.50.
Customer reviews reflect the general enthusiasm surrounding Bernstein's offerings. Alyssa Y. praised the Lox sandwich for its balance of flavors and relatively lower price, while Pancho Del Rancho highlighted the Bagel Popper—a smaller, bite-sized option that remains satisfying without overwhelming the palate. The inviting, yet bustling atmosphere may leave you longing for a seat, but with such flavors, taking your bagel to go is just as gratifying.
Perhaps it’s the hearty, chewy texture that echoes the classic New York bagel culture. Or maybe it's the creative schmears that keep your taste buds dancing long after your visit. Whatever the case, Bernstein's Bagels has successfully carved out a niche for itself as a go-to spot for bagel aficionados.
So, whether you're a local or just passing through, make sure to stop by Bernstein's Bagels. Grab a sandwich, savor a schmear, and soak in the vibrant energy of this culinary hotspot in Portland!
“ Loved the bagel! I got the Lox its in the Sandos section. Its salmon capers, onions and cream cheese you pick which bagel you want it on. I added cucumber and avocado it came out to 18.25. Which tbh is cheaper than other Lox bagels at other Portland bagel shops. Its usually 20 and up. My friend got the Popper without smear since it was spicy and a plain sesame bagel with cream cheese and she spent 15. I am 5 stars for everything except atmosphere. Thats only because it gets so packed and there is VERY limited seating so expect not to eat there just kind grab and go. The coffee is NOT free you pay for it at the counter and then get it yourself. Its just out in the open so it can be confusing. The water station is down the hall. Tbh I will be back I loved the sandwich it was amazing. ”
“ The bagel popper from Bernsteins Bagels is a delightful bitesized treat, perfect for a quick snack or breakfast on the go. The outer dough is soft and chewy, capturing the essence of a traditional bagel, while the inside is often filled with cream cheese or other savory fillings that melt in your mouth. Its not too heavy but packs enough flavor to satisfy. Ideal for anyone craving a smaller portion of that classic bagel experience. Highly recommended for bagel lovers looking for a convenient and tasty option! Pancho del Rancho. ”
“ Breakfast did not like how the egg was done Lox liked the one on 26 cafe more, something about the salmon here isnt 100 percent for me its a standard lox tho! Just didnt absolutely blow my mind Popper too salty for me didnt give amazing flavor, wish it was more jalapenoy Turkey crando wish there was more cranberries but I adored this the most out of anything Ive tried here Trout good portions mix, enough fish and cheese I liked the dill really good with poppy seed bagel types Garlic Everything ”
“ Extremely delicious bagel sandwiches! The self serve coffee is also surprisingly good! No tipping here. Limited seating. If I lived in Portland, I would come back again and again. ”
“ This place has great New York style bagels, a bit chewier and denser than the type usually found in the Portland area. Their cream cheese whipped with Mama Lils peppers has a great tang and was delicious on a toasted garlic bagel! My husband had the trout bagel and loved it. We arrived at 11am on a Friday and beat the rush, but a line was starting to form by the time we left. ”
“ Id be surprised if theres a better bagel spot in Portland. Closest thing to NYC style Ive experienced since moving here. The bagels were fuego and the smears were 1010. Even the atmosphere inside felt like being back on the east coast. For sure coming back to try more ”
“ Best bagels west of New York! And BN probably east of New York. And this comes from me, who used to not only eat New York bagels growing up but also worked in a bagel bakery while a senior in High school on Long Island. Just walking into the shop awakens memories of my old bagel store. Love this place. And the people are great also, did I mention? ”
“ I love this place. The bagels are so fresh and got a really good chewness to them. Amazing flavour and smear options. Great amount of cream cheese. They also include tip in the prices which is just real nice, I appreciate that! Supper cute spot to enjoy your bagle too! ”
